July 2006... Week 1

Week 1

Livingstone  - Zambia  (Cont)

It took us about an hour to drive from the border to Livingstone. We were flying to London in three days time and would be leaving Rupert at Foleys old garage in the town so we had two days to get ready and re-pack everything in Rupert from the cab into the back box.

Jollyboys is situated in the centre of town in a quiet street behind the museum so it is very convenient for shopping etc. We arrived in mid afternoon and were shown to our room by Kim, an American, one of three expat girls who run the hostel.

Being a backpackers place even though our room was described as 'en suite' and was probably the best they had it was pretty basic. The furnishings were limited to a bed, a chair and a shelf but at least we had our own bathroom and electricity and it was certainly better than being in one of the four or eight bed dorms!

The place was humming with overlanders and youngsters backpacking their way round Africa, at this time of day most were lying around the pool or in the bar. After leaving our stuff in the room we decided to join them and headed to the bar to claim our free Mosi, the great local beer in Zambia.

Jollyboys isn't huge but it is well laid out with a nice pool and a bar with Sat TV, there is also a small curio shop and even a small Internet cafe. It only has a couple of private en suite rooms so the majority of people end up in the dorms or camp in the small garden and use the communal showers and loos. There is a big kitchen so you can self cater if you wish and it's very secure which is important if your staying in town.

Being Sunday dinner that night was roast beef with all the trimmings, we hadn't had too many chances since being in Africa to have a roasty so we opted to use one of our vouchers and eat in tonight. The food is good but dinner at Jollyboys is dished out at 6.30pm sharp and has to be booked in advance however, if your not there or late your meal is likely to be taken by someone else and with all the youngsters it feels a little bit like being back at Uni or school.
