About us...

Welcome to our website and thank you for following our adventures in Rupert our Landrover. We hope you will enjoy the journey as much as we expect to!

We are Pete & Sue Egan, from Liverpool, age immaterial, suffice to say we were teenagers during the swinging 60's when Liverpool was The place to be, The Beatles, Gerry & The Pacemakers, Cilla Black, Bill Shankly, Ken Dodd, ah heady days!

We seem to have been travelling all our adult lives, before we met Pete worked in the Midlands for a couple of years and then in 74 we both moved to London for three years after which we really got the travel bug and in 77 headed East, no not to Norwich but to Riyadh ,Saudi Arabia.

Saudi in those days was embarking down the road of modernisation and Pete being a Telecom engineer of remarkable skill (guess who's writing this!) was much in demand,  Sue (a librarian) was happy just to get away from the Dewey Decimal filing system!

Saudi was a very interesting experience to say the least and we will always be grateful we saw it when it still retained a lot of its old Bedouin character.

However, in 79 we got parole and moved the short distance from Saudi to Bahrain. The gap between the two countries is very small in geographical terms but huge in social & cultural terms so it was a very nice change from the hardships of the previous 2 years. After three enjoyable years in Bahrain (ON ON) we decided 5 years in the Middle East was enough, there was lots more of the world to see.

So in 82 we moved onto Macau in SE Asia, totally different yet again, not as frantic as Hong Kong, Macau was at that time a sleepy enclave, neglected for donkey's years, but about to start on a program of modernisation, it was a hectic period. The main things which took time adjusting to was the sheer volume of people in such a confined space and working a 9-5 routine after the very civilised working day of 7 to 2pm in the Middle East.

Eventually in 85 we decided to move on yet again and ended up in Botswana and you know the rest  (well you do if you read the Home page!).

We have to say we would have quite happily continued living the expat life in Africa except the company suddenly moved us to Fiji. Whilst  in Botswana Ben & Beauty (Boo) came into our lives so after three great years plus a year in Fiji we finally returned to the UK in 1989, dogs in tow.

We now live in West Sussex, Ben & Boo have sadly long gone and we are currently back in Liverpool with Pete's Mum while our house is rented out in preparation for our trip.

We had planned to start our trip way back in July but incredibly both Sue's parents ( Peggy & Henry) unexpectedly passed away in August and October respectively so this trip is dedicated to their memory.

Postscript: We have now been on the road for over two years and it has been an amazing experience so far. Whilst camped in the Masai Mara in Kenya in August 2007 we received news that Pete's Mum, Molly, had passed away so this trip is also in her memory as she loved to hear all our tales and to Pete's Dad. Frank, who died in 1984 while we were in Macau, China so sadly never got to hear about Africa.
